A Nigerian businessman in South Africa has refused to shut down his business despite growing fears and tensions surrounding renewed xenophobic attacks, saying doing so would leave dozens of South Africans without a source of livelihood.
Speaking in a viral video circulating on social media, the businessman said he employs more than 35 South Africans and could not bring himself to close his shop and leave the country despite concerns for his safety.
“If I lock my shop and leave, over 35 South Africans will be displaced,” he said.
The businessman explained that while reports of attacks on foreign nationals have sparked anxiety among many immigrants, he believes abandoning his business would have severe consequences for the workers and families who depend on it.
His remarks have attracted widespread reactions online, with many social media users praising his commitment to his employees and highlighting the economic contributions of migrants to South Africa’s economy.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over xenophobic sentiments in parts of South Africa, where foreign-owned businesses have occasionally been targeted during outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence.
Despite the uncertainty, the Nigerian entrepreneur maintained that his priority remains protecting the jobs of his workers, stressing that the livelihoods of more than 35 South Africans are tied to the continued operation of his business.
The viral statement has reignited debate over immigration, economic inclusion, and the role foreign entrepreneurs play in creating jobs within South Africa.
