France has been hit by one of its biggest waves of protests in years, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets over rising living costs, poor school conditions and concerns about public services. The demonstrations, which escalated into violence in several cities on October 17, have placed renewed pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

How the Unrest Began

The unrest grew out of student demonstrations that began weeks earlier over deteriorating school conditions and teacher shortages, particularly in working-class areas. The movement expanded as frustration over high fuel prices, the cost of living, public spending and declining public services drew in trade unions, activists and other demonstrators.

On October 17, nationwide marches brought together an estimated 550,000 people, according to the Interior Ministry. Organisers put the turnout at around 800,000. While many people demonstrated peacefully, groups in several cities clashed with police, looted shops and attacked public buildings.

The protests reflect broader dissatisfaction with economic pressures and the direction of government policy. However, the peaceful demonstrators’ grievances should be distinguished from the violence and destruction carried out by some groups.

Damage, Arrests and Government Response

The unrest caused extensive damage in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and other cities. In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the historic city hall, with its roof collapsing. Shops, public offices and other buildings were targeted, leaving business owners facing costly repairs and lost income.

By October 19, authorities reported around 2,400 arrests and estimated that approximately 3,000 businesses had been damaged or looted, also nearly 1,000 police officers had been injured. One demonstrator died after suffering a cardiac arrest during the protests, according to earlier reporting; authorities did not establish that the death was caused by police action.

The government responded with targeted curfews and restrictions on gatherings. In Paris, an overnight curfew was ordered for Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district from 11 p.m. on Monday, October 19, until 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Some other cities introduced restrictions for minors, while Marseille temporarily banned gatherings.

President Macron rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s offer to resign and called for greater transparency over failures in intelligence gathering and security planning. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu supported localised restrictions rather than a blanket curfew across Paris.

As France assesses the damage, questions remain over how authorities will restore order while addressing the grievances that brought so many people onto the streets. Trade unions have also called for further strikes and rallies on November 5, suggesting that public discontent may continue beyond the immediate unrest.
