Africa finally has its first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and it belongs to Côte d’Ivoire.
In a tense and hard-fought Group E encounter against Ecuador, the Elephants showed resilience, patience and belief to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory and become the first African nation to win a match at this year’s tournament.
For much of the game, it seemed as though the two sides would settle for a draw. Ecuador created chances and tested the Ivorian defence, even striking the woodwork, while Côte d’Ivoire continued to push forward in search of a breakthrough.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
In the 90th minute, substitute Amad Diallo rose to the occasion. Latching onto a well-worked move, the young forward calmly found the back of the net to send Ivorian supporters into celebration and write his name into World Cup history.
It was more than just a winning goal, it was Africa’s first victory of the tournament.
After South Africa’s defeat in the opening match and Morocco’s impressive draw against Brazil, the Elephants stepped up to deliver the result many across the continent had been waiting for.
For a nation returning to the World Cup after a 12-year absence, the significance of this moment cannot be overstated. Côte d’Ivoire are no longer content with simply making up the numbers on football’s grandest stage; they have arrived with the ambition, belief and quality to compete.

Speaking after the match, head coach Emerse Faé made his team’s ambitions clear.
“We came to the U.S. for this, and we came here with ambitions, with high hopes. We don’t want to just have visited the U.S. and have to go back.”
The victory also ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run and gave the Ivorians an early advantage in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.
Of course, the road ahead does not get any easier. Germany, fresh from their 7-1 demolition of Curaçao, await in Côte d’Ivoire’s next outing.
But for now, the Elephants have given Africa something to celebrate.
At a World Cup where the continent continues to dream of making history, Côte d’Ivoire have taken the first step.
Africa has its first winners.
And the Elephants are leading the charge.
