The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to deliver drama, surprises and stories that extend far beyond the final scorelines.

From Germany’s ruthless seven-goal display to Cabo Verde’s heroic resistance against the European champions, the latest round of fixtures offered a reminder that football’s biggest stage rarely follows the script.

Germany 7-1 Curaçao: Finding Joy in Defeat

Germany produced the most dominant performance of the tournament so far, dismantling Curaçao 7-1 in a ruthless attacking display. The four-time world champions were clinical from start to finish, overwhelming their opponents with relentless pressure and efficient finishing.

Yet despite the heavy defeat, one of the most memorable moments of the match belonged to Curaçao’s supporters. When their team scored, the celebrations inside the stands were nothing short of euphoric. For a nation competing on football’s grandest stage, that solitary goal represented pride, resilience and a moment that supporters will cherish long after the tournament ends.

It was a reminder that football is not always measured by victories alone.

Japan 2-2 Netherlands: A Tournament Classic

Few matches have captured the imagination of fans quite like the encounter between Japan and the Netherlands.

The Dutch opened the scoring before Japan fought back to level the contest. The Netherlands regained the advantage, only for Japan to respond once again and secure a deserved 2-2 draw. Played at a relentless pace and filled with moments of quality, the match showcased the determination and character of two sides unwilling to surrender.

It was football at its most entertaining and, for many supporters, the standout match of the tournament so far.

Sweden 5-1 Tunisia: A Difficult Evening for the Eagles of Carthage

Tunisia endured a disappointing night as Sweden claimed a commanding 5-1 victory. The Eagles of Carthage struggled to contain Sweden’s attacking movement and were punished repeatedly throughout the contest.

While the result is undoubtedly a setback, Tunisia still have opportunities ahead of them to respond and keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde: The Draw That Felt Like a Victory

This fixture ended without goals but produced one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories.

European champions Spain were held to a goalless draw by Cabo Verde, the small island nation off the coast of West Africa. Many expected Spain to secure a routine victory. Instead, Cabo Verde delivered a disciplined and fearless performance, frustrating one of Europe’s strongest sides to earn a famous point.

At the heart of that resistance was the Cabo Verde goalkeeper, Vozinha, who stood out as the hero of the night. Time and again, he produced crucial saves to deny Spain, standing firm under constant pressure and keeping his side alive in moments when the game looked destined to break open. His composure and shot-stopping ability became the foundation of Cabo Verde’s historic result.

For a country often overlooked in global football conversations, the result carried enormous significance. It was proof that belief, organisation and determination can narrow even the widest gaps in reputation.

Final Sip

Germany demonstrated their attacking power. Curaçao found joy in a moment of pride. Japan and the Netherlands delivered a match to remember. Tunisia suffered a difficult setback, while Cabo Verde showed that football’s beauty lies in its unpredictability.

As the tournament progresses, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: some of the most memorable stories are not always written by the favourites.
