Manchester City have officially said goodbye to one of the most influential players of their recent era.
Rodri has completed his move from Manchester City to Barcelona, bringing an end to a remarkable seven-year spell in England and opening a new chapter in his career back in Spain. Barcelona have signed the midfielder on a four-year contract running until June 2030.
The transfer is reported to be worth an initial £51 million, with the deal potentially rising to around £65.4 million depending on additional payments.

For Manchester City, however, this is about much more than losing another player.
They are losing the midfielder who became central to one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Rodri joined City in 2019 and went on to make 298 appearances for the club, winning 14 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups.
His most famous Manchester City moment came in the 2023 Champions League final, when he scored the only goal against Inter Milan to deliver the club’s first Champions League title.
His individual achievements have also been extraordinary.
Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or and has now added another major achievement to his career after captaining Spain to the 2026 World Cup title. He was also named the tournament’s best player.
That makes his departure particularly significant.
Rodri is leaving Manchester City immediately after helping Spain become world champions, and he now returns to his homeland to join Barcelona.
For Barcelona, the signing represents a major statement.
The Spanish giants have secured one of the most accomplished midfielders in world football, with Rodri expected to bring experience, leadership and control to a Barcelona midfield that already contains a number of talented young players.
For City supporters, meanwhile, there is an obvious sense that an important era has come to an end.
Rodri’s contribution went beyond statistics. His ability to control the tempo of matches, protect the defence and dictate play made him one of the most important pieces of Manchester City’s system.
His departure also comes during a period of major change at the club.
Pep Guardiola has left Manchester City, bringing an end to another defining chapter, while the club now prepares for a new era under different leadership. Rodri’s exit adds another major change to that transition. Yet Rodri leaves Manchester with his legacy firmly established.
He arrived as a talented midfielder and leaves as a Premier League champion, Champions League winner, Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup-winning captain.
Now, the question changes. Can Rodri help Barcelona dominate Spain and challenge for European glory?
And can Manchester City rebuild their midfield and continue competing for Premier League titles without the player who anchored their midfield for so many years?
Two clubs have different questions to answer.
