Nepal is facing one of the most devastating natural disasters in its recent history after catastrophic flash floods swept through parts of the Himalayan nation, leaving a trail of death, destruction and thousands of missing people.
The disaster struck on August 26, particularly around the Rasuwa district and the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, after a sudden surge of water, believed to have been linked to an upstream ice avalanche and temporary river blockage, sent a massive wall of water and debris downstream. By Saturday, August 29, Nepal’s disaster authorities reported that the death toll had climbed to 626, while 2,426 people remained unaccounted for. More than 4,400 people have reportedly been rescued as search-and-rescue teams continue working through devastated communities. (Kathmandu Post)

And the numbers could still rise.
The floods have ripped through communities across several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan and Nawalparasi, destroying homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure. (World Health Organization)
The destruction has been extraordinary. Rivers that normally sustain communities have suddenly become powerful channels of mud, rocks, ice and debris, sweeping away everything in their path.
Entire stretches of roads and bridges have disappeared, cutting off communities and making rescue operations extremely difficult. Hydropower facilities and other vital infrastructure have also suffered extensive damage.
The tragedy has also crossed borders. The disaster affected areas near the Nepal-China border, with deaths and missing persons reported in China’s Tibet region as well. (Reuters)
