The Federal Government plans to deploy 3,700 telecommunications towers to connect nearly 20 million Nigerians living in communities without network coverage.
Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, announced the initiative on Friday during the commissioning of the first site of the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (NUCAP) in Amaeke, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
In a post on X, Tijani said the project would extend connectivity to underserved communities, with more sites scheduled for rollout in the coming weeks and months.
He highlighted how poor network access affects farmers seeking buyers, traders awaiting payments and families struggling to reach healthcare providers during emergencies.
The minister said the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy by expanding digital access and enabling more Nigerians to participate in economic growth.
Tijani also urged communities without network coverage that are yet to be included in the deployment plan to report their locations to the ministry for consideration.
The project is part of the government’s broader push to close Nigeria’s digital divide and ensure that geographical location does not limit access to economic opportunities and essential services.
