The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end, and African nations has every reason to celebrate.
Out of the ten African nations that qualified for this year’s expanded World Cup, nine have secured places in the Round of 32. It is one of the continent’s strongest collective performances on football’s biggest stage and another sign that the gap between African football and the traditional powerhouses continues to narrow.
From Morocco’s attacking displays to Cabo Verde’s fearless performances against European and South American opposition, African teams have shown they are no longer at the tournament simply to participate they are here to compete.

Who Looks Most Likely to Reach the Round of 16?
Several teams have already shown they have what it takes to go even further.
Morocco once again look like Africa’s standard bearers. Building on their historic run in Qatar 2022, they have combined defensive discipline with attacking quality and continue to look comfortable against some of the world’s strongest teams.
Côte d’Ivoire have grown stronger as the tournament has progressed. Their resilience and ability to grind out important victories could make them dangerous knockout opponents.
Ghana have shown tremendous character. Although the Black Stars suffered a defeat to Croatia, they earned valuable results earlier in the tournament and proved they can compete with elite opposition.
Egypt have quietly put together a disciplined campaign. Their organisation and patience have been among their biggest strengths, and they will believe they can trouble any opponent in a one-off knockout match.
Senegal finished the group stage with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq. That result could provide the confidence and momentum needed heading into the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, South Africa, Algeria, Cabo Verde and DR Congo have all demonstrated determination and resilience throughout the group stage. As knockout football often rewards discipline and belief, none of these teams can be underestimated.
Can Africa Reach the Quarter-finals?
History suggests the knockout rounds become significantly more difficult, but this tournament already feels different.
Nine African teams have reached the Round of 32, and several have already produced performances capable of challenging football’s traditional giants.
The expanded format also gives more nations the opportunity to build momentum before facing the biggest favourites.
