The biggest football tournament on the planet officially began in spectacular fashion as the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The opening ceremony was a celebration of football, culture and music, reminding fans that the World Cup is about much more than what happens on the pitch. With all 48 participating nations represented in a grand flag procession, the atmosphere inside the historic stadium was electric.

History was made even before the first ball was kicked, as Estadio Azteca became the first stadium ever to host three FIFA World Cup opening matches.

Fans around the world were treated to unforgettable performances. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and EJAE delivered a powerful rendition of “DNA,” the official anthem of the tournament, while Shakira and Nigerian superstar Burna Boy lit up the stage with their performance of “Dai Dai.”

For Africans watching across the continent and in the diaspora, Burna Boy’s appearance carried special significance. Seeing an African artist perform on football’s biggest stage was a proud reminder of Africa’s growing influence in global entertainment and culture.

The celebration did not end there. Mexican rock legends Maná thrilled the home crowd, while J Balvin, Tyla and Alejandro Fernández added to a star-studded lineup that reflected the diversity of this historic tournament.

For those who watched, it was a beautiful start to what promises to be an unforgettable World Cup. And for those who missed it, social media quickly filled with clips, reactions and praise for a ceremony that many fans described as one of the most memorable in recent years.

The football may decide who lifts the trophy, but the opening ceremony reminded us why billions fall in love with the World Cup every four years: it brings the world together, if only for a moment.
