The 2026 FIFA World Cup may be approaching its conclusion, but before the champions are crowned, one more prestigious contest remains.

France and England will meet in the third-place playoff after both sides suffered heartbreaking defeats in the semifinals, setting up another blockbuster encounter between two of Europe’s football giants.

Although neither nation will be lifting the World Cup trophy, finishing third remains a significant achievement. Beyond the bronze medals, both teams will be playing for national pride, momentum and the opportunity to end their campaigns on a winning note.

For France, the match represents a chance to bounce back after seeing their hopes of reaching another World Cup final come to an end. Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, “Les Bleus” were among the tournament’s standout teams from the very beginning. They finished the group stage with a perfect nine points before producing impressive performances in the knockout rounds.

Throughout the tournament, France have combined pace, attacking quality and defensive discipline, with Mbappé once again proving to be one of the competition’s most influential players. Ending the campaign with a third-place finish would be a fitting reward for a side that has consistently ranked among the tournament’s best.

England also enter the playoff determined to leave the United States with something to celebrate.

The “Three Lions” produced some of the tournament’s most memorable moments, including the thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in what many fans described as one of the games of the tournament. Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and England’s talented squad have shown resilience throughout the competition, overcoming difficult knockout-stage opponents before eventually falling in the semifinals.

Manager Gareth Southgate’s side will now have one final opportunity to reward their supporters with victory and secure a place on the World Cup podium.

Matches for third place often produce open, entertaining football, with both teams able to play more freely after the pressure of competing for the title has disappeared. That could make this one of the most exciting fixtures of the tournament’s closing weekend.

Beyond the medals, the encounter also offers one final opportunity for some of the tournament’s biggest stars to leave their mark. Supporters will once again be watching Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and a host of world-class talents take to the World Cup stage before the competition draws to a close.

One Last Chance

The World Cup trophy may no longer be within reach, but there is still plenty to play for.

For France, it is the chance to finish a remarkable campaign with a medal.

For England, it is another opportunity to show why they remain among the world’s elite football nations.

One final match.

One place on the podium.

And one last opportunity to end the 2026 FIFA World Cup on a high.
