When Dr Andrew Suberu arrived in the Soviet Union in 1988 as a 19-year-old student, he did not imagine that the country would become home for almost four decades.
Today, Dr Suberu is a medical doctor, entrepreneur, business consultant, film actor and community leader. He currently serves as Vice President of the Regional Nigerian Community in Russia and Deputy Secretary General of the Nigerian Community in Russia, while also serving as President of the Nigerian Community in St. Petersburg, a position he has held for more than 20 years.
As he prepares to celebrate his 55th birthday, Dr Suberu reflects on a journey that has taken him from a young Nigerian student in the Soviet Union to a respected figure within the Nigerian community in Russia.
From the Soviet Union to Community Leadership
Dr Suberu describes himself as “a man of the people, for the people and by the people,” adding that he is committed to peace and progress.
His journey in Russia began in 1988 when he arrived in the then-Soviet Union to study medicine at just 19 years old.
When asked whether he imagined at the time that he would still be living in Russia almost four decades later, his answer was simple: “No.”
However, his years in the country have been successful, both personally and professionally.
One of the biggest challenges he faced when he first arrived was learning the Russian language, understanding the culture and adapting to a new system.
Over the years, he has witnessed major changes in Russia and believes that foreigners today have opportunities that were previously unavailable, including pathways to Russian citizenship.
However, he believes foreigners must also take responsibility by studying the culture and obeying the laws that guide foreign residents.
Twenty Years of Service to Nigerians in St. Petersburg
For the past 20 years, Dr Suberu has served as President of the Nigerian Community in St. Petersburg. His work has centred on supporting Nigerians, promoting unity and helping members of the community navigate the challenges of life in Russia.
As Vice President of the Regional Nigerian Community in Russia and Deputy Secretary General of the Nigerian Community in Russia, Dr Suberu works with community leaders from different regions across the country. Presidents and secretaries from various cities are connected through a communication network that helps the leadership coordinate the welfare and needs of Nigerians across Russia.
For Dr Suberu, the goals of the community are centred on four key values: unity, togetherness, assistance and love.
One of the biggest challenges facing Nigerians in Russia, he said, involves proper documentation and legalisation.
Many Nigerians and international students arrive in Russia without connecting with the Nigerian Embassy or the Nigerian community, making it difficult for them to receive assistance when problems arise.
“Most people always show up only after they enter into problems,” he said, referring to issues such as expired visas, registrations and passports.
He encourages Nigerians to join their local communities and seek assistance before their problems become emergencies.
Supporting Students and Addressing Stipend Delays
The Nigerian community also assists newly arrived students, particularly with accommodation, insurance, registration and other important documentation.
Dr Suberu also addressed concerns about delays in scholarship stipends affecting some Nigerian students in Russia. According to him, the matter is one the Nigerian community continues to raise with the Nigerian Embassy in Russia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria.
He explained that while the Nigerian community is not a financial organisation, it continues to serve as a bridge between Nigerians and the relevant authorities.
The community also assists Nigerians with complaints involving schools and other institutions and has helped resolve concerns relating to documentation and passport services.
Beyond Community Leadership
Dr Suberu’s professional journey in Russia extends beyond his medical career and community work.
He has been an entrepreneur since 2004, working in the restaurant and nightclub business, while also serving as a business consultant facilitating relationships between African and Russian businesses.
He is also an experienced actor.
Dr Suberu has been a film actor in the Russian Federation for 25 years and has appeared in films, television productions and on Russian television stations on numerous occasions.
His long career in entertainment has allowed him to build another identity alongside his work as a doctor, entrepreneur and community leader.
When asked about entrepreneurship, his advice was straightforward: understand the laws guiding any business before entering it and ensure that all taxes are properly paid.
He also acknowledged that finding reliable business partners can be one of the greatest challenges for entrepreneurs.
Celebrating 55 Years of Life
Dr Andrew Suberu was born on 23 August 1971. Although his 55th birthday fell on a Sunday, the celebration is being held on Saturday, 29 August 2026, allowing family, friends and members of the community to come together and celebrate the occasion.
The birthday celebration is expected to bring together good friends from Nigeria and other African countries, with guests looking forward to African dishes, live music, shows and entertainment.
As he celebrates 55 years of life, Dr Suberu says he is most grateful to God for life, safety and protection.
After almost four decades in Russia, Dr Suberu also reflects with gratitude on his personal life. He is happily married and has grown-up children.
For the future, his goal is simple: moving to the next level.
And to young Nigerians facing challenges in Russia and beyond, his message is one of encouragement: “Good luck and never give up despite all challenges ahead.”
