African football endured another night of mixed emotions in the ongoing FIFA World Cup Round of 32, as DR Congo joined South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire in exiting the tournament following a dramatic England comeback.

The Congolese side had given Africa fresh hope early on, but ultimately could not hold on as England turned the game around in the second half.

DR Congo started the match with intensity and belief, shocking England in the 7th minute when they took a surprise lead.

The early goal set the tone for a tense and emotionally charged knockout encounter, with England forced to chase the game for long periods.

Despite sustained pressure, DR Congo’s disciplined defensive structure held firm for much of the first half.

Mpasi Shines Despite Pressure

One of the standout performers of the match was DR Congo goalkeeper Mpasi, who delivered a commanding performance between the posts.

Mpasi produced a series of crucial saves to deny England repeatedly, keeping his side in control and frustrating the English attack with his positioning and composure.

At several moments, he looked set to guide DR Congo toward one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

England Fight Back Through Harry Kane

However, England eventually found their breakthrough through captain Harry Kane, who inspired a second-half turnaround with two goals.

His equaliser shifted the momentum of the match, before his second strike — a beautifully taken finish sealed the comeback and swung the tie firmly in England’s favour.

Despite DR Congo’s resilience, they were unable to recover from the double blow.

Full-Time: Another African Exit

The match ended with England securing a comeback victory, eliminating DR Congo from the tournament and ending Africa’s latest hope in the knockout stage.

It means three African nations have now exited at the Round of 32 stage.

South Africa were narrowly beaten 1–0 by Canada, while Côte d’Ivoire lost 2–1 to Norway. DR Congo completed the trio of exits after their 2–1 defeat to England.

All three sides were highly competitive, with fine margins ultimately deciding their fate.

Morocco Keep Africa’s Hopes Alive

Amid the setbacks, Morocco remain the only African team so far to secure qualification to the Round of 16.

The Atlas Lions produced a standout performance against the Netherlands, drawing 1–1 before winning 3–2 on penalties. Their progression ensures Africa still has representation in the next phase of the tournament.

More African Teams Still to Play

It is important to note that several African nations are still awaiting their Round of 32 fixtures, meaning the continent’s overall picture is still developing.

With five African teams yet to play their knockout matches, there remains strong potential for further progress beyond Morocco’s qualification.

Final Word: A Tournament Still in Motion for Africa

While early exits for South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and DR Congo have brought disappointment, Morocco’s success keeps African hopes alive.

With more matches still to come, the final story of Africa’s World Cup campaign is far from written.

The coming fixtures will determine whether this becomes a tournament of early heartbreak or historic progress.

From Mpasi’s heroic saves to Kane’s clinical double, the match captured both the promise and pain of African football at the highest level.

For now, Morocco carry Africa’s hopes forward.
