Tuesday, August 18, 2026, marks eight years since the passing of Kofi Atta Annan, Ghana’s distinguished diplomat and the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died on August 18, 2018, in Bern, Switzerland, at the age of 80. (United Nations)

Kofi Atta Annan served as UN Secretary-General from January 1997 to December 2006, becoming the first person to rise to the position from within the ranks of the United Nations staff. During his tenure, he championed human rights, the rule of law, peacekeeping, development and efforts to make the United Nations more effective and responsive to global challenges. (UN Archives)

His contribution to international peace and cooperation was recognised in 2001 when Kofi Atta Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward a better organised and more peaceful world. (United Nations)

Beyond his title and diplomatic achievements, Annan became widely respected for his measured voice, commitment to dialogue and belief that international cooperation could help build a safer and  more  dignified  world.  His  legacy  continues  to  influence  conversations  about  peace, development, human rights and the role of multilateral institutions.

Eight years after his passing, the world continues to remember a Ghanaian who rose to one of the highest positions in international diplomacy and used his platform to advocate for peace, humanity and cooperation.

Today, and every day, we remember Kofi Atta Annan, a guiding force for good whose legacy continues to inspire.
